This Chapter describes the procedure for installing and configuring Ray Gun on your Power Macintosh computer.
Before using Ray Gun, please make sure that you have a basic knowledge of the Macintosh operating system. This includes knowing how to use the mouse, windows, menus, etc. If these terms are strange to you, please consult your Macintosh documentation.
*Note: With MacOS 7.6 and above, Apple's Monitors and Sound control panel is unwilling or unable to select third party Sound Manager drivers. Therefore, if you are using a third party audio card you will need to load the older Sound control panel. Also, Sound Manager 3.2.1 is part of Apple's System Software 7.6 and above, so an additional extension is not required and may not be present. You can, however, load a Sound Manager extension under these circumstances without ill effect. If you are in doubt...load it and rest easy.
Ray Gun runs within Arboretum's HyperEngine, which is included free, for "stand-alone" style operation. The HyperEngine gives Ray Gun basic audio input/output services and offers enhanced features such as disk-based preview and real-time play-through processing.
Ray Gun will also work as an Adobe Premiere format plug-in. Compatible programs currently include Macromedia DECK II, Opcode Vision/Studio Vision/SVP, Gallery TurboMorph, MOTU Digital Performer, Emagic Logic Audio and Adobe Premiere.
Ray Gun supports the built-in Apple audio hardware using Apple's Sound control panel and Sound Manager system extension which are standard parts of the Mac System Folder. Ray Gun also supports third-party sound cards with appropriate Sound Manager drivers. Check with the manufacturer of your third-party audio card for their latest drivers.
Digidesign Audiomedia II and III, Korg 1212 I/O and
Lucid PCI24 card owners please note that the HyperEngine offers special direct support to
your cards, without the use of Sound Manager drivers. So if you own
one of these cards and you're only using Ray Gun with HyperEngine you
can skip the next two paragraphs.
If you are using a Digidesign card you should have the card's software extension (the DigiSystem INIT) installed in your Extension's folder. In addition, you'll need the Digidesign Sound Drivers, an extension that enables the card to be used by your Mac's Sound Manager software.
Shown below are the two extensions required for use with Digidesign cards. Other manufacturers will supply different software with their products.
